George S 講師のプロフィール

Self-Introduction

Hello, my name is George, and I am an English teacher with around three years of experience teaching online. I love teaching and helping people learn, as I enjoy learning myself. I believe every student is unique and requires an individualized approach to learning, which we can discover together through our lessons.

Before becoming an English teacher, I had an interesting career as a semi-professional gamer. I competed in various smaller tournaments, as well as some international ones, in DotA 2. During this time, I also coached many players, both paid and unpaid, which is where I realized my passion for teaching. Teaching runs in my family—two of my grandparents were teachers, and my sister and two of my cousins are university professors. After coaching for about a year, I lost interest in competitive gaming and decided to pursue a career in teaching.

Since then, I have primarily taught students in one-on-one online classrooms, working with learners aged 6 to 14 as well as adults. I have experience teaching basic and intermediate English, as well as some business English. I am also open to exploring new areas, such as dentistry-related English, which I have been teaching for the past year. This experience has expanded my vocabulary and made me more conscious of oral hygiene.

Teaching Experience and Preferences

After earning my bachelor's degree in 2020, I spent a year gaming semi-professionally while also coaching players. There are many parallels between coaching and teaching, which helped me realize my passion for education.

With some guidance from my sister, I began looking for online teaching opportunities. Within a few weeks, I found my first students, many of whom I still teach today. Over the past three years, I have taught through various platforms, including ClassInn, Zoom, Skype, and Discord, and have worked with students of different age groups. I have grown more confident in my teaching skills and comfortable with making and correcting mistakes—an essential trait for any teacher.

I believe learning can be an engaging and enjoyable experience, though this depends on both the student and the teacher. I prefer teaching students at a pre-intermediate to intermediate level (A2 to B2 CEFR). Lower-level students require more repetition than I prefer, while advanced students demand greater experience and knowledge than I currently have.

General Lesson Plan

My teaching approach follows these steps:

  1. Assessing the Student's Level – I conduct an initial broad-level assessment (A1 to C2) during the demo lesson. Over the next 5 to 10 classes, I refine this assessment to determine a more precise level.

  2. Selecting Learning Materials – After the demo, I suggest potential materials (books, websites, texts, etc.) and review them with the student to choose the most suitable option. Students are also welcome to propose materials if appropriate.

  3. Lesson Structure – We follow the selected materials while focusing on the student's main weakness (reading, writing, speaking, or listening). I typically address this at the beginning of each lesson, often through small talk or targeted exercises.

  4. Clarification and Review – Towards the end of each lesson, I leave time for students to ask questions or review anything they did not understand. However, I also address confusion immediately when it arises, as it's easier to explain concepts in the moment.

I see the classroom as a place where me and my students are seen as equals. What this means is that once we enter the classroom we both follow certain rules of etiquette.
Classroom rules:

  1. If there is some loud noise coming from my microphone or from the students it would be very difficult to focus for one or both of us. So please make sure that is not the case before the lesson starts. This could also happen if you are using speakers and not headphones as your microphone could pick up the audio of your speakers.
  2. Arriving and leaving as scheduled unless there is an emergency in which case I would like to be informed as soon as possible.
  3. If there is something I or the student does not like or is bothered by we can discuss it after the class. Feel free to critque anything you do not like.

Thank you for taking the time to read this! I look forward to meeting you soon.
