Moi! Minä olen Maija.

I’m a native Finnish teacher from Helsinki, currently living in Japan.

I speak Finnish (native), Japanese and English. I’ve always had a strong passion for languages, both teaching and learning them.

I majored in Japanese language and culture at university, and after graduating, I continued my studies in Japan. Through my own language-learning journey, I’ve experienced many different learning methods, and I understand how challenging learning a new language can be. I’m not shy to say that I’m a slow learner myself. Practice really does make perfect!

I have over seven years of experience teaching Finnish. I have experience teaching through in-person private and group lessons at language schools, as well as teaching multiple travel- and grammar-focused courses in Japan. I currently teach Finnish online to students from all over the world.

I have taught a wide range of students, from complete beginners to advanced learners, both in person and online. My students study Finnish for various reasons, including applying to Finnish universities and high schools, as well as for personal interest and hobbies. All of my students who have taken the Finnish language proficiency exam (YKI) have passed. :-)

In addition to teaching, I have experience working as a translator, including translating a Finnish television program into Japanese.

As a Helsinki native, I can also teach puhekieli. Puhekieli is spoken everyday Finnish that is often not found in textbooks. I’m also happy to give advice about traveling in Helsinki or daily life and culture in Finland.

Teaching Finnish in Japan creates a strong sense of connection between my life in Japan and my home country, and I want to share Finnish culture with my students. Celebrating the Finnish holidays in Japan is important for me.

Let’s learn Finnish together in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, tsemppiä!
