kaede Tutor Profile

【Brief Overview】
My name is Kaede (楓). I’m from the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in China. My interests include cross-cultural exchange, visiting museums and art galleries, hiking, traveling, and listening to the radio. I’m confident in my standard Mandarin pronunciation. I studied abroad in Sendai for three and a half years and earned my Ph.D. in comparative Japanese-Chinese linguistics this past March. Currently, while conducting research in comparative Japanese-Chinese linguistics, I also teach Chinese on Cafetalk.

【Teaching Experience】
Private Chinese Lessons (December 2017 – December 2019)
· Levels Taught: Advanced Japanese learners
· Number of Sessions and Duration: Held lessons once every two weeks for two consecutive years
· Textbook Used: “发展汉语 (Developing Chinese)” by Beijing Language and Culture University

【Self Introduction】
I’ve completed a half marathon and spent a month backpacking solo through southwestern China. So far, I’ve visited 20 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities in China. I once spent two full days (48 hours) on a train. In Japan, I finished 100 bowls of “Wanko Soba.” Right now, I’m doing 1,500 skips with a jump rope every day. Last year, I tried horseback riding. I’m always taking on new challenges.
I’ve always loved cross-cultural exchange, and because I wanted to connect with Japanese people, I frequently attended a Japanese language school in Sendai. Over the course of about three years starting in April 2023, I attended more than 100 sessions and enjoyed conversing in Japanese with Japanese volunteers for a total of over 120 hours, but I still have a mountain of things I want to chat about. The photo below shows the farewell party held for me at that Japanese language school.
The first time I saw a sign on a bus in Japan that read, “この座席は高いので、転落防止の為、深くお座りください」(This seat is high, so please sit “deeply” to prevent falling)” (see image below), I found it interesting. Because the movement is horizontal, the word “里” (meaning “back”) instead of “deep” would be used in Chinese in this context. I find these kinds of differences between languages very interesting.
This is a photo from a conference I presented at (see the image below).
