Hello there. My name is Peter and I was born and grew up in Scotland in the United Kingdom. After finishing high school, I studied languages at college, and then decided to go travelling in Europe. I spent some time in Germany, France and Greece, before moving to Sweden, where I worked for many years as an English teacher and translator. I have recently returned to live in Scotland and would like to continue helping non-native speakers to learn or improve their English.
I have 24 years’ experience teaching English as a foreign and second language. I have been a private tutor, taught young people in nursery, primary and high schools, worked in language schools for adults, and for four and a half years I was a university lecturer: in short, I’ve taught every level from beginners to university. In addition to Swedes, I have worked with students from countries such as Poland, Lithuania, Greece, Syria, Somalia, Thailand and Vietnam.
One of my strengths over the years has been an ability to connect with all kinds of people from different social and cultural backgrounds and to establish a relaxed, encouraging and productive working relationship with them.
In Sweden, teachers put a lot of time and effort into trying to build a relationship with each individual student based on respect, trust, and empathy. As a result, the student-teacher relationship in Swedish schools is generally very friendly, and in my experience, this produces better results, so I always try to create a relaxed and positive atmosphere when teaching. I always aim to build up my students’ confidence when they use English, so there will be no harsh criticism during my lessons. So far, I have studied seven foreign languages myself and I can still remember how it feels to grapple with the various challenges involved, so you have my sympathy and respect!
