Hi! My name is Marites Smith. I live in Alabaster, Alabama USA. I have been away from Cafetalk for a few years because, I became busy with my fulltime job. Now, I decided to teach again and I have interesting topics to teach. I accept students from beginners to intermediate.
I speak Tagalog, Japanese and a little Spanish. I was an Assistant Language Teacher in Japan. I moved from one prefecture to another to teach English.
In 2007, I went to Zhuhai, China to take my TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) course. After I finished TEFL, I taught English at Gateway Language Village, a total immersion school for Chinese adults.
My teaching style:
My lesson is always student centered. I give my students the chance to talk 90% of the time. I always encourage my student and make sure I build their confidence so they can speak English comfortably.
I give my students enough room to fail and learn from their missteps. It helps the students develop their critical-thinking and self-reflection skills.
I am very patient with my students and I always encourage them not to be timid and to believe in themselves.
I believe in the saying, ‘A good teacher is like a candle – it consumes itself to light the way for others.’
