Welcome to Issei's Cafetalk!

My name is Issei, and I am from Osaka, Japan. A little about myself: I currently live in Osaka but had lived in Canada for 10 years. I studied Philosophy, English Literature and History. I recently obtained an MA degree in Philosophy from University of Western Ontario.
I love teaching, and interacting with the students. I wish to become a professor at university, and I look forward to talking with you! :)

I have given a number of presentations on philosophical themes both in Canada and in the United States. My English is as good as that of the native speakers'. Hence, I am eloquent at explaining and teaching Japanese in English. I have 610 (out of 677) TOEFL score and have taught TOEFL before. I also got 980 on TOEIC and passed the 1st Grade in Eiken (English Proficiency Skill organized by Japanese government) after coming back temporarily to Japan in 2016.

Qualifications:
   English
- I have lived and studied in Canada, and I hold BA and MA (graduate) degrees from Canadian universities.
- I had taught English grammar in cram schools in Japan for 3 years.
- I hold TOEFL score of 610, and can teach to International students.
- TOEIC 980
- Eiken Grade 1(英検一級)

   Japanese
- I taught Japanese at a language school in Montreal.
- I have been privately teaching Japanese grammar and conversation to a number of students in London, ON.

   Philosophy
- I have an MA degree in History and Philosophy of Science and Medicine.
- I have given several lessons and lectures on philosophy and history at a university level in Canada.

I am interested in reading, learning and cooking. I cook various Japanese food, though the ingredients are sometimes hard to get here in Canada. I love cooking for people, and I often hold Japanese dinner party throughout the year. As I studied philosophy, I am also interested in reading and learning in general. My particular interests are Early Modern Medical Philosophy, both in Europe and in Japan. More specifically, I am interested in Descartes and Leibniz, Daniel Sennert and Paracelsus amongst others. I have written a paper and presented on Ninja Science as a historical piece. I am currently working on an articule about demons (oni) and evil spirits, yokai monsters as causes of illness in pre-Modern Japan. I am also working on a collective essay project on Philosophy of Dragon Balls for publication.

For people who want to learn Japanese:

My teaching style is both spontaneous and organized. Spontaneous in that I am able to quickly adjust to the particular students' needs during the lessons and I am good at offering a lesson that educes out students' intellectual curiosity in the subject matter. Organized in the sense that I divide levels into 6 different stages - Beginner's Level; Elementary Level; Lower Intermediate; Upper Intermediate; Lower Advanced; Upper Advanced Levels. I have my original materials that correspond to each level and will continue to make any necessary grammar exercise sheets. Just to flesh out the levels in passing:

Beginner's Level introduces you to the fun of learning Japanese language. It is designed for complete beginners with no exposure to Japanese as well as for someone who has self-studied with a textbook. It primarily focuses on the basic grammar in 12-steps that prepares you to have a simple conversation and everyday language.

Elementary Level prepares you for more natural conversation style, which involves you to use conjunctions and connectives, conditionals and conversational phrases (suffixes). This level is for someone who has a basic understanding of grammar such as te-forms, passive voice and comparatives as well as is able to conjugate verbs and adjectives without a problem.

Both Intermediate Levels use actual books (usually famous classics that we read in elementary school) and use the grammars introduced in the books to construct a more advanced conversation style. It is also more oral based lesson, and listening and reading skills will be improved.

Both Advanced Levels use no textbook materials (except upon request) and it is basically a freestyle conversation. The aim of this level is so that the students can freely express their thoughts and converse naturally, using difficult concepts and arguments.

Further, I will do flashcards and vocabulary quizzes in the beginning of each class, taking up no more than 10 minutes, ending the lesson with giving out homework. Should you have any questions or request, do not hesitate to contact me. :)

For those who want to learn English:

I am particularly good with grammar and explaining the subtleties in English words and concepts. I can of course teach English for the beginners, using simple and everyday vocabulary, but I am also able to converse at an academic level English about various topics. Having lived in Canada for almost 10 years, I can tell you a lot about what to expect as a foreigner staying in Montreal/Toronto area and am able to give you a lot of advice to avoid legal issues in housing for those who are thinking of coming to live here for school or for work.

As far as the actual lessons go, I would like to have an half an hour conversion (free) in order for me to determine what your level is. This also helps me what exactly you are looking for in learning English (i.e. conversational skills, grammar for school & exams, vocabulary or writing aid, etc...). I would also have you answer some of the grammar questions I provide. Based on the interview and the quiz, I will offer.
