Self Introduction

Hi!

My name is John. I am from Davao City, Philippines. I have a degree in Linguistics and studied Applied Linguistics in graduate school. This means that my studies were focused more on understanding the nature of languages and how to effectively make people understand the complexity of using a language.

My passion for linguistics has encouraged me to learn more about how languages work and how to help myself and other people become better at using the language.

I have experienced learning a new language so I can understand how it feels to try to make sense of why a language works in such different ways. Being both a teacher and a student in different aspects of my life has made me realize the important things that language students must learn from their teacher.

Teaching Background

I used to teach in a language center here and Davao for a year while teaching students online on different platforms including Cafetalk. I taught online for more than 6 years in different companies. However, in the last few years, I decided to move to other jobs online which helped me become a freelance writer for private clients.

I also worked as a translation proofreader for a Japanese company which opened my mind to the importance of comparing one language to another in foreign language learning.

Working in different fields made me understand more everything that I have learned in school. My experiences gave me the wisdom on how to apply the theories I have been learning for so long and how they relate to real language situations.

People often have a misconception that second language learning is the same as foreign language learning. But, the truth is, both are very different not only in teaching techniques but also when it comes to the background of the students themselves. These are very important things to consider when teaching.

Teaching Style

My teaching style starts with learning the structure of the language. This is an important part of learning especially for beginners because it helps a lot in making sense of how to properly make simple statements. From naming objects, describing things, and expressing simple thoughts.

I always like to make my students create example sentences to encourage them to use the language more with the help of sentence patterns discussed in each lesson.

My students are from different levels: from beginners to advanced. I have no problem teaching students from different backgrounds. But I must get to know the student more before I can prepare a lesson for them. This is why I often ask for an introduction session before the actual lesson starts.

I probably will throw some jokes here and there during the lesson to make things more fun and interesting. At the same time, I also try to encourage my students to study more and make them responsible for their own learning. I always let my students ask all the questions they need to ask to make sure they really understand the lesson before moving on to another lesson.

Don’t worry, I don’t bite. In fact, I am very friendly and easy-going. I’m pretty sure we will have a good time learning! See you in my lessons!
