Would you like to speak English or Japanese more naturally and fluently? I can help with that!

Who am I?
I'm James, originally from Toronto, Canada, and now living near Tokyo, Japan. I have been teaching English for over 20 years and Japanese for 15 years, in Canada, the United States, and Japan. I have taught children in kindergartens, all levels of school through university, and of course adults of all ages and professions. I have a PhD in Linguistics and a TESOL certificate that I obtained in Canada teaching immigrants and refugees. I also speak fluent Japanese, so I understand the challenges of learning a 2nd language!

What are my lessons like?
My lessons focus on COMMUNICATION, through lots of speaking and listening. You will learn grammar and vocabulary, but always while talking about things that interest YOU, and while having fun, engaging conversations.

Do I need a textbook?
I create all lesson materials from scratch, based on your level, strong points and weak points, language goals, and personal interests. That means every precious moment of time together will be 100% devoted to improving your ability to communicate. If you have a textbook you'd like to use, of course we can study it together.

Do you only teach conversation?
I have experience teaching everything from academic writing to drama in English. Here are some examples of what I've taught in the past:
  • Daily conversation (theme/topic-based)
  • Test prep (TOEIC, TOEFL, Eiken, SAT, GRE, LSAT, JLPT, Kanji Kentei Test)
  • Business English (various fields: IT, Sales/Business Development, Medical, etc.)
  • English Teacher Training (if YOU want to be an English teacher)
  • Pronunciation/Intonation
  • Public Speaking
  • Interview Preparation
  • English Karaoke
  • Academic Writing
  • Academic Reading and Comprehension
  • English Book Club
  • English Drama and Musical Theater
I'm nervous about speaking. Shouldn't I study from my textbook more until I memorize it?
Let's think about that for a moment!

I want to learn how to play tennis, but I've never tried. Here's my plan: I'll go to the bookstore and buy several books about the rules of tennis and tennis technique. Next, I'll go home and study hard for 3 months, making notes and memorizing all the information. Sometimes I'll watch tennis matches on YouTube.

OK, 3 months have passed! Now I'll go to the court. What do you think will happen?

I won't be able to hit the ball at all, and everything will happen so quickly I won't have time to react. Unfortunately, most of that 3 months I spent studying was a waste of time. I'll need to learn everything for the first time, because real tennis is not the same as book tennis!

Learning to communicate in a language is the same! If you want to listen, understand, and speak another language, it's best to start right away, on Day 1. Of course you won't understand much, and you won't be able to speak at all, but starting with lots of real input will help you get used to the language and start to communicate it in very quickly.

And that's my job!

How can I start lessons with you?
Send me a message, and tell me a bit about yourself:
  1. What is your goal for studying English?
  2. What are your hobbies, interests, job... In other words, what topics would you like to talk about in English?
  3. How many hours per week would you like to study?

I look forward to hearing from you soon!
