When it comes to English, I can help you improve your speaking ability for English conversation at any level or I can help you prepare for exams which test your grammar, and your speaking and listening skills. I understand English grammar very well and can explain it to you very simply.

Maybe you're interested in complex topics like legal translation-I have translated many contracts and patents from Japanese into English. We can look at Japanese contracts and then I'll show you how I would translate that into English. We can work on it together.

Perhaps you'd prefer to discuss topics using business English, or discuss topics from newspapers, magazines or websites.

My lessons are flexible. You can bring any material to work on in my class.

TEACHING BACKGROUND

I am a qualified teacher and I graduated from university with a degree in law, LL.B., which is required for all lawyers in the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and other common law countries. I also have a Bachelor of Arts, B.A. degree, majoring in English and a teaching diploma GradDip Tchg.

I taught English in Thailand for two years at undergraduate level, and then I taught English conversation in Kobe and Osaka for two years. I have also taught at high schools in New Zealand, Australia and Japan.

English Conversation

I like teaching English conversation at any level, and I can help you gain confidence expressing yourself in English, while improving your listening ability.

We can do free English conversation, or we can use pictures to help you build a story from the action in the pictures, then you can tell me what is happening. I’ll help you create your story and then guide you as you tell me the story. I’ll ask you questions about the story so we can interact, listening and speaking, developing our conversation. Then I’ll ask you to describe the physical world by telling me what you see in the pictures.

We can also discuss any topic that interests you, using pictures, books, newspaper articles or other materials about your hobbies and interests.

I took a module in linguistics at university. I can help you understand and practice the phonetics of the English language. You don’t have to be perfect.

English Grammar and Exam Preparation

These lessons are customizable. Many people need to study for an English test or exam. I understand English grammar very well and I can help you understand it too with quite simple explanations. It's actually not that difficult. Let’s look at past exam problems together. I will tell you the right answer and explain it to you. Then we can work on more problems that you are likely to see in your exam. I can explain the answers using English or Japanese or both, whichever you prefer.

I’ll also encourage you to speak the sentences you are working on. This will help you learn those sentences at a deeper level and remember them well, while improving your English conversation ability at the same time.

Advanced Level English

These lessons are customizable. As a Japanese to English translator with over 20 years experience, I have translated many contracts, patents and other kinds of materials. I can share with you many of the things I have learned and help you to write about and discuss, legal or business English. Would you like to work together with me translating Japanese contracts or other materials into English? I've got many examples I can share with you. Perhaps you are interested in discussing or translating materials on intellectual property, current events and economics. You are welcome to bring your own material in Japanese or English for us to work on together.
