Hello everyone! My name is Mai and I am originally from London, United Kingdom but now I live in tropical Far North Queensland in Australia. Before I moved here, I lived in New Zealand for two years. I am fortunate to have beautiful beaches, the lovely countryside, and mountainous views right outside my doorstep.

My background is in the arts; I hold a BA in Creative writing and a MA in Journalism. I have 4 years of teaching experience in English working in both mainstream primary and secondary classrooms, colleges, and private one-on-one tutoring. I have worked with children aged between 4 – 16 years old, and adults in person and online.

I am TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) qualified which has also equipped me with the skills and knowledge required to teach language and literacy to students from a non – English speaking background.

Why teaching?

For a few years I worked for a wide range of health charities in the UK raising awareness through administrative and fundraising work. However, I realised this wasn’t what I wanted to do forever. I developed a love for teaching whilst transitioning from charity work to assisting primary school students who had only a basic understanding of the English language.

This experience was a real eye opener. The environment encouraged my enthusiasm for teaching, I relished the chance to support student development as it allowed me to bring out the best in individuals.

My Teaching style:

My first and foremost goal is to help support your learning through guidance, understanding your needs and creating resources tailored to your specific ability and needs.

Everyone starts from somewhere and mistakes are very normal. I believe I can instil confidence in my students as I have been told I am incredibly patient, friendly and a good listener! Speaking is one of the main ways I find students engage in activities quickly and learn the language better; I always start topics with engaging conversations to break the ice and asses prior knowledge! I love learning about all the diverse backgrounds and cultures this work provides me.

What my lessons involve:

My lessons are designed to ensure excellent progress in language development. The content is broken into bite size pieces, the structure is easy to follow, and incorporate the use of interactive games! I cover all areas of language aspects (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) and I also enjoy proofreading and correcting documents.

Sometimes, I might email you resources on the topic we will be covering in that lesson. If you decide to have future lessons with me, we can discuss a more personalised study plan that suits you. I can also create customised resources suitable for your ability. After the lesson I will provide you with constructive feedback to help you understand areas of development and help us personalise your learning!

I am keen to offer lessons to all levels (beginner – intermediate - advanced) and both children and adults who have basic knowledge of English or who would like to improve their skills at a more comfortable pace.

Depending on how comfortable you feel, you can decide to use a webcam or just audio.

Some interesting things about me:

  • I toured Australia for a year in a caravan
  • I cycled from Paris to London in 4 days to raise money for charity
  • I love camping and glamping and spend many of my weekends exploring the country with my family
  • I have two lovely daughters and enjoy talking about 'parenting'.
  • I love auto-biographies and children's books. Roald Dahl is one of  my favourite authors
  • I am a big fan of making fermented foods such as kimchi and sauerkraut
  • I find painting landscapes very theraputic
