Hi, my name is Masumi Bigelow.
I'm a certified Japanese teacher with 5 years of experience.
Right now I live in Taiwan, teaching Japanese and English as a tutor.


My Life Experience with Languages

Learning languages is a passion of mine.
Ever since I've started my interest in English, I took every opportunities to learn different languages.
In my high school year, I studied at a local high school in Seabeck, WA, as an exchange student.
This experience helped me not only with my English but to have a diversified perspective towards my own culture and language.

I also lived in Florence, Italy, for few months to do some volunteer work, where I learned most of my Italian through conversing with friends and studying it myself.

Now in Taiwan, while I give private Japanese or English classes, I've been teaching myself Mandarin Chinese. With a help of my friends and especially my husband, who is an American lives in Taiwan from his childhood, I'm picking up the language quick.

I'm very confident my own experience of learning foreign languages is definitely helping me to be a better teacher and to equip myself with different approaches for teaching a new language to my students.


My Teaching Experience as an English teacher

  • Total of 6 years: teaching English at cram schools in Tokyo and Oita, Japan (preparing students for college or high school entrance exam , TOEIC, EIKEN: Test in Practical English Proficiency) 
  • 14 years: private classes with students in various ages (youngest starting from 5 to adults) 
  • 3 years: working at building facility management company at an international university as a translator and an interpreter.


My Teaching Experience a Japanese teacher

  • 2 years: teaching Japanese as volunteer to students from different countries, Italian, American, Vietnamese....
  • 1 year: teaching Japanese at a Japanese school in Taichung, Taiwan
  • 2 years: tutoring Taiwanese students from beginners to advanced business levels of Japanese language

What I enjoy the most when I teach Japanese is to help them understand my culture and people better through teaching the language. I strongly believe this is the key to learning any languages.
