I've always wanted to study abroad, but that dream never came true until my late 30s.
I was 37 years old and had no knowledge in English. when I went to college. I was optimistic and thought going to school in Canada will help me learn English, but of course I had no clue what everyone was saying. I felt like crying every day, and that is when I found Cafetalk!!
I am so thankful for my tutors. They made my very short, exciting, and scary half-year in Canada so fulfilling.
I am back in Japan, saving my money to study abroad again... I'm going to use this time to study English, so when I go back to Canada, I can impress my friends!!

Assigns his subordinate in charge of business abroad, and starts studying English out of guilt. '09 Starts studying Chinese. Visits Chinese client and finds out that knowledge in English is not enough, but in order to deal with clients overseas, he needs to learn the local language. '11 Starts studying French. Visits French client and finds out that English it not enough, but he needs to learn the local language even in Europe.
- Comments:
I am currently learning English, French, and Chinese for business.
In 2009, I scored 620 in TOEIC, in 2010, 715, and in 2011, 780. Although my TOEIC score is improving, I'd really like to see a more rapid improvement. My goal is to score 900 in 2012 and to learn some phrases I can use in business.

- Language learning experience:
Collage entrance prep.
- Comments:
I am currently studying abroad. I decided to give online English lessons a try in order to take my English to the next level. I can speak to my friends in English, and understand English that is used in the class,However, I am still making small mistakes on my English exams that is stopping me from achieving the score I want. I am afraid I will loose momentum and stop studying English in depth once I go back to Japan and return to my Japanese lifestyle. I'd like to take this opportunity to improve my overall English skill.

- Language learning experience:
Language learning experience: Nao has been studying at home with various English learning materials such as "world wide kids" and other DVDs and books. He can communicate in basic English.
- Comments:
I have been using English when I talk to Nao at home. I would like to get him started with Skype lessons as well. He is fickle and can not focus for long period of time. Can my 5 year old son still take online lessons with Skype?

Kana

- Language learning experience:
Kana has been learning English at home on and off for three years.
- Comments:
I have decided to apply for a blog monitor because I felt the need to give Kana more opportunity for output. I think using English and “actually speaking” is necessary to improve our English skill, but I can't give her the opportunity to do that since I do not know English well enough. I thought online English lessons would be a great choice for her since I can choose her lesson time around our schedule and study at home, or anywhere we want using the PC. Plus, I like how Cafetalk one-on-one lesson has no entrance fee or registration fee. After reading the tutors' profiles, I noticed that some of them are parents, or have rich experience in teaching children, that was really appealing to me. I plan to sit with Kana during the lesson to learn with her together.

UP
cafetalk.com/monitorblog/3rd/up01
4/male/Tokyo/kindergarten
- Language learning experience:
UP has been exposed to both Japanese and English by using both books and music. His mother started speaking to him in English when his basic Japanese language skill were being formed. Currently (over the past 2 years), He's been studying with a children's show for native speakers, and little more challenging books. He can ready easy children's books by himself, however, his Japanese skill has been improving drastically since he had entered kindergarten which resulted in a gap between his Japanese and English skill.
- Comments:
I think UP is doing very well with his English considering the only English he has used has been at home with his mother. Still, He has an option to communicate with his mother in Japanese. It has been difficult to give him a chance to speak in English outside our home. He had a chance to use English with other children his age, and really enjoyed it. I realize that it's time to give him more opportunities to use English outside our home. I hope that online lesson will give him what we are lacking and give him the stimulation he needs.
Since he is only four years old, I'm not looking for him to learn grammar, but rather, I want him to learn apply what he knows, and enjoy using the skills he already has. I want him to experience the joy in communicating in English.

Korean lessons
coby

- Language learning experience:
Korean: I have been studying Korean in language school for about 5 years, but I am still at beginner level because I had a lot of absences… I obtained the fifth degree in the Korean language Proficiency Test (4 years ago). English: I had enrolled as a student at the same school as the same language school where I studied Korean, but I quit 2 years ago, and started going to another language school 6
months ago. Beginner level.
- Comments:
I started studying Korean because of a trend. My mother got hooked on Korean dramas(t.v. shows) about (5.5 years ago) => I went to Korea with mom (5 years ago) => Started studying Korean (5 years ago) => Hooked on K-pop (current) I'm using my busy schedule at work to not study Korean.... so I've been roaming between Beginner and Intermediate level with no improvement. :p I'm going to take this opportunity to achieve 4th degree in the Korean language proficiency test!

- Language learning experience:
English: 9 years in school, two weeks in Canada, 1 year in English language school in Japan. Korean: Started learning as a complete beginner 15 months ago.
- Comments:
The only Korean phrase I knew was 안녕하세요and감사합니다 when I started my life in Korea 15 months ago. Although I have been living in Korea for over 1 year, I have a lot of Japanese friends and acquaintances in the neighborhood, So the only person I speak to in Korean is my teacher in language school (other than few exceptions). I can see the Improvement from my effort since I first arrived in Korea. I get to experience the joy of communicating with others when I am able to use the Korean I have learned with local people when I shop at neighborhood stores or restaurants. But I feel that I lost some of my language skill since my vacation started at language school.
I came across Cafetalk and signed up. I wanted more opportunities to practice my Korean conversation skills, but I had been too nervous to take online lessons. I am truly thankful to be chosen as a blog monitor despite my indecisiveness. I'm going to give it my best.

4 years in col1lage, 1 month in Japan, self-study since then.
- Comments:
It's hard for me to answer when people ask me “Why are you studying Japanese?”I wanted to understand Japanese because I was interested in Japanese anime and manga (Japanese comic books), but that's not why I continued to study Japanese. I do still like anime, the real reasons is that through Japanese language, I discovered many experiences including wonderful friendship. That is why I want to increase my Japanese skill, plus, I get to enjoy Japanese anime without subtitle as a bonus. ;)
