私は原著（英語:Paperback）で読み、その後何年かしてNHKのTVドラマを観た者です。時に辞書をひき、挿絵を見ながら日本にはない作中の道具などを知っていくという経験があったので自分の頭の中にアメリカ開拓民の彼らの生活が今でも鮮明に残っています。この本はアメリカの歴史を知る意味でも、英語を勉強するのにもタイムリーな良いテキストになると思います。

ノーベル賞を受賞したハンガン作家の作品です。雪をこれほど多彩に描ける作家を見たことがなかったので、心に残りました。鳥を重要なモチーフとしている点も印象的でした。韓国の歴史「済州４・３事件」をテーマにしていますが、戦争が続く今につながる物語であり、記憶を継承する重要な役割を持った小説だと感じています。

    当時登山が好きだったので、山の先輩に薦められました。神に選ばれた者だけがエベレスト山頂へ行けると言われるように、ヒマラヤ山脈はこの世とは思えない美しい場所でありながら、簡単に命を落としてしまう残酷さがある世界が描かれていて、読んでいても恐ろしくなることがありました。でもヒマラヤにとり憑かれた主人公は、身体と魂を登頂のために捧げます。それだけ人が入り込めない地球の領域なのだとも思いました。私は美しい山を観ることも好きですし、若い頃、主人公の尖っていて不器用ながらもストイックに己の道を突き進む姿にあこがれました。（でも、今はもういいかな・・・）
