私は原著（英語:Paperback）で読み、その後何年かしてNHKのTVドラマを観た者です。時に辞書をひき、挿絵を見ながら日本にはない作中の道具などを知っていくという経験があったので自分の頭の中にアメリカ開拓民の彼らの生活が今でも鮮明に残っています。この本はアメリカの歴史を知る意味でも、英語を勉強するのにもタイムリーな良いテキストになると思います。

ノーベル賞を受賞したハンガン作家の作品です。雪をこれほど多彩に描ける作家を見たことがなかったので、心に残りました。鳥を重要なモチーフとしている点も印象的でした。韓国の歴史「済州４・３事件」をテーマにしていますが、戦争が続く今につながる物語であり、記憶を継承する重要な役割を持った小説だと感じています。
