When do we learn a word?
When I learn a new word, someone tells me a word which I didn’t know. In that case I remember not only the word but also the scene. I learned a word “picturesque” about 30 years ago when my American friend said it on the express way in Japan. He was expecting a beautiful scene to take a photo but from Narita to Tokyo there are tall noise blocking walls on the both side of the road. Then he said “the express way is not picturesque.” or something like that. Then he explained it.
In this way, I learned some new words. eg. TOEFL is a daunting test. I though Japan is more regimented society. A mug shot. Japanese Japanophile. Hudson river is stale.
One of my ex-coworkers said, I write the word many times. I spent many ballpoint pens to learn new words. Maybe he is right in a sense of Pavlov’s dog. It happens when I type. Suffix -tion can be typed very quickly.
Another finding., People learn counting frim one to three in many languages relatively quickly. But from four, it not as easy as one to three.
