Hydrangeas are in bloom!

Muu.

Hello! I am a Japanese tutor, Muu.

As I wrote in my last column, June is the rainy season called "Tsuyu" in Japan except for Hokkaido.

At this time of year, hydrangeas bloom beautifully in various parts of Japan. Hydrangea is a deciduous shrub native to Japan. Thay have beautiful, large, colorful:blue, purple, and pink, flowers. It is  said that the color of the flowers change depending on the acidity of the soil.(Strictly speaking, the part that looks like a flower is not a flower but a bundle of calyxes.)

One of the famous places for hydrangeas is Meigetuin Temple in Kamakura City, Kanagawa Prefecture. Many people visit it to see the colorful hydrangeas wet in the rain every year.

I also like to go to parks or temples to see this pretty flowers.
I took some pictures of them blooming in a neighborhood park this morning.
I would like to enjoy this colorful scenery for about a month.

See you soon.

Hello Senpaisensei,nThank you for your comment. Your mother must be happy this time of year. Anyway,it should not be forgotten that "beautiful flowers are poisonous"!

Hello Muu-sensei!n Thank you for your conversation topic on Hydrangeas! They are indeed beautiful! My Mother loves these and plants them all around our house along with Rhododendrons (both great spelling challenges!). She gets very excited when they are blossoming! However....please do watch out as.... both flowers are highly toxic/poisonous so don't eat them and don't let any adventurous kiddies (or doggies) munch on them! Symptoms can range from shortness of breath and dizziness, through to paralysis, coma, or death (depending on the plant). So please watch out where you put them in your garden (don't plant them next to the Cat Nip plant ;) and don't take a snack on them when visiting a temple garden no matter how beautiful they do look!
