Adventure!

Recently, I had a chance to attend the Dungeons and Dragons: The Immersive Quest event which is currently being held not too far from my home. The event is based on the role playing game Dungeons and Dragons and features a series of interactive challenges to enjoy (preferably with a group!).

After choosing your class (wizard, fighter, druid, or rogue), you can use your wristband (which contains an RFID chip) to activate challenges and complete them to gain experience, level up, and gain new powers and items to help you ultimately defeat a dragon and recover the magical crystal that it had stolen.

Throughout the event, you encounter several iconic monsters from the Dungeons and Dragons world, such an owlbear, a roper, a beholder, and a pair of intellect devourers. Some challenges are more mental, such as pattern matching, and some are more physical, such as jumping across rocks over lava or avoiding lasers. As you complete the challenges, you also have to find four words and combine them into a password that allows you to move on to the final challenge - the dragon battle!

The final fight takes place in a room with a large screen, where you have to use various arm movements to block the dragon’s attacks and fight back. After defeating the dragon, you can move to the tavern area to rest, enjoy the scenery, have a drink or snack, and check out the merchandise, like t-shirts, books, and figures.

The event cost me $40 CAD and lasted for about an hour in total. Overall, I think it was an interesting experience, and it was more interactive than most of the “immersive” events that I’d seen before. I think my favourite part was the tavern room at the end because the event organizers did a fantastic job with the decorations and it looked very authentic!
