Vocabulary Related to the Rainy Season (梅雨 / Tsuyu)

Hello! June has just begun.
In Japan, the rainy season (tsuyu) is just around the corner.
So today, I’d like to introduce some useful vocabulary related to tsuyu.
Here are some words you’ll often hear in everyday chats with Japanese people around this time — take a look!

日本では、もうすぐ梅雨入りの時期です。
ということで、今回は梅雨にまつわる言葉をご紹介します。
日本人との何気ない会話でよく使われる単語を集めましたので、ぜひチェックしてみてください。

• 梅雨（つゆ）rainy season 장마
• 梅雨入り（つゆいり）beginning of the rainy season 장마의 시작
• 梅雨明け（つゆあけ）end of the rainy season 장마의 끝
• 小雨（こさめ）light rain, drizzling rain 가랑비
• 大雨（おおあめ）、強い雨（つよいあめ）heavy rain 큰비
• 霧雨（きりさめ）misty rain, 안개비
• 土砂降り（どしゃぶり）downpour　억수, 장대비
• 集中豪雨（しゅうちゅうごうう）／ゲリラ豪雨（ゲリラごうう）torrential 집중 호우

★洗濯 LAUNDRY 빨래
• 洗濯物（せんたくもの）Laundry 세탁물
• 洗濯物が乾かない（かわかない）the laundry doesn't dry 빨래가 안 마르다
• 洗濯物がたまる The laundry piles up 빨래가 쌓이다
• 生乾き（なまがわき）damp, half dried, not fully dried 빨래가 아직 덜 말랐다
• 部屋干し（へやぼし）dry in a room 방에 널기
• 洗濯日和（せんたくびより）Good day for laundry 빨래하기 좋은 날

• カビ mould 곰팡이
• カビ臭い（くさい）musty/moldy smell 곰팡이 냄새
• 除湿（じょしつ）dehumidification 제습
