Rainy days often make us feel like staying in—and that’s perfectly okay. Instead of seeing it as bad weather, think of it as a chance to slow down, enjoy quieter moments, and explore activities you might not normally have time for. Here are five thoughtful and fun things to do on a rainy day:
1. Enjoy Indoor Sketching by the Window
Rainy weather creates a peaceful setting for sketching. Find a comfortable spot near a window, and sketch what you see—raindrops, trees, rooftops, or people walking with umbrellas. You might even capture how the weather makes you feel. Use pencils, pens, or even light watercolours to express the calm, moody tones of the day. This is a wonderful way to improve your observation skills and build your sketching routine.
2. Read Something Meaningful
Get lost in a good book. Choose a story you’ve been meaning to read, or explore articles, poems, or short stories that lift your spirits or make you think. Rainy days are perfect for slowing down and enjoying words at your own pace.
3. Try a New Recipe in the Kitchen
If you’re feeling a little creative (and hungry), try cooking or baking something simple and satisfying. You could experiment with soups, muffins, or a warm drink. Cooking is a great way to engage your senses, and you might even discover a new favourite.
4. Watch a Thought-Provoking Film or Documentary
Take advantage of the cosy weather and enjoy a film that makes you think or inspires you. Whether it’s about nature, travel, history, or human stories, rainy days are ideal for quiet viewing and reflection.
5. Do Something Mindful
Take time to relax your body and mind. You could do some gentle stretches, listen to calming music, write in a journal, or simply sit and enjoy the sound of the rain. These moments of quiet can be refreshing and grounding. Check out my Journal Writing Pack below, that you could try to get yourself started
