Alternative activities for the rainy season!

今週のテーマ: 梅雨の過ごし方アイデア5選

Tim Ar.

Hello everyone !

The weather

Ah.... the weather. It’s often the easiest and safest topic to broach when kicking off a lesson with a new student. It can be understood by most levels. It’s uncontroversial. It can get the ball rolling and is a great way to do a quick sound, accent and pronunciation check. What do you think? Are there any better topics / ways to break the ice?

5 things to do

The “rainy season” is upon us in Japan and it's associated with high levels of humidity and heat. It’s often troublesome to go outdoors so here are some ideas for your "down time".

  1. Put your phone away. Check out this video for more discussion. It’s 2 minutes with subtitles. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C75NyXiiJck
  2. Do a puzzle – Puzzles are great. You might like to borrow a jigsaw puzzle from your local library or give yourself a new challenge and try an English language crossword puzzle. Check out this resource. https://www.esolcourses.com/content/exercises/crosswords/crossword.html
  3. Read a short story and tell your friend about it - This is a great way to practice reading, speaking and story telling. For some free easy books, check out this site as a starting point https://abridgeacademy.com/free-online-books-for-esl-students/
  4. Make a salad – Salads are fun, healthy and easy. My favourite is this one (https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/salade-nicoise) and all the ingredients are often readily available.
  5. Breathe in and out while listening to some relaxing birdsong music from Australia- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOzz7Un54pc. You'llbe amazed what that can do!

I really, really, really like comments and feedback. Please let know what you think!
