When it comes to reading on the beach, I prefer a book that is simple and engaging with a storytelling style. That makes it easy to follow, even when my feet are buried in the sand and my mind is half-distracted by the waves.

One of my favorites is an e-book by Althea Faith Marie, with a captivating title, "How to Enjoy Reading Boring Books Like the Bible." She starts the story by narrating how her English teacher in elementary school encouraged young students to develop their love of reading in order to improve their vocabulary and general knowledge. Her teacher's practical advice motivated the young Althea to read books and magazines at the library, until one day, her parents suggested that she start reading the Holy Scriptures, too, more popularly known as the Bible.

Althea was not interested because the Bible was a thick book and didn't have pictures. So "boring," she said. But her parents encouraged her to just start reading it for two reasons:

#1 - The Bible is a good help to increase vocabulary. With all the 1,200 pages and almost 800,000 words it contains, Althea could definitely widen her collection of words and phrases in English.

#2 - The thought-provoking ideas enlighten every reader with life-saving knowledge. 'Every Scripture is profitable for teaching, for correction, and for instruction so that each person may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.' That means reading the Bible could make people better persons.

So, Althea gave it a try, and it changed her perspective. Her elementary school teacher's recommendations to use her imagination when reading something was put into practice. She remembers the clear writing on the blackboard: EACH WORD YOU READ IS A PICTURE! This guided Althea along the way. She applied the practical tips not only in her Bible-reading sessions, but also when reading and understanding all other printed matters like newspapers, business books, company guidelines, e-mails, test questions, web articles, and all other written documents.

Now, as a writer, Althea shares with her readers important points to remember so that reading never becomes boring, but rather an enjoyable task. Her e-book is easy to pick up and pause. When we're at the beach, our reading materials should be "snackable" - a book that we should be able to stop, take a swim, and pick up where we left off. How to Enjoy Reading Boring Books Like the Bible has short, clear sections that make this easy. It's just a light reading, but has big takeaways. And since the beach is a place where we naturally reflect on life, this e-book doesn't only spark my imagination, but it is also very motivational - all while sipping a cold drink in the sun.
