Favorite Books to Read on the Beach

今週のテーマ: 海辺で読むお気に入りの本

İrem Altan

The waves gently kiss the shore, the sun warms my skin, and I’m holding a fresh iced coffee... There’s nothing quite like reading a good book by the sea. But not just any book — ones that truly speak to the soul.

This summer, I’m bringing two special ones with me:

?? Jonathan Livingston Seagull – Richard Bach

The story of a seagull who dares to be different. Jonathan doesn’t fly just to eat — he flies for freedom. This delicate little book feels like a soft breeze. As I lie under the sun flipping through its pages, I feel like I’m soaring through the sky. It’s light, spiritual, and deeply inspiring.

?? The Setting Sun – Osamu Dazai

But not every day is light and breezy. Some days, I long for something darker, deeper, more introspective. That’s when I turn to The Setting Sun by Osamu Dazai. Set in post-war Japan, it tells the story of a crumbling aristocratic family — especially a young woman trying to find meaning in a world that’s falling apart.

Dazai’s writing is quiet, yet incredibly powerful. Even with the calm around me on the beach, his words stir deep waves within.

"The sunlight of the day, the sorrow in the room."
That’s what this book feels like — a beautiful contradiction of brightness and sadness.

These two books make my beach days not just relaxing, but emotionally rich and meaningful. My eyes on the sea, my mind lost in the pages. It’s like an inner journey.
If you’re looking for something that touches your soul this summer, give these two a try.
