Receptive skills (reading and listening) are an important part of language learning. A wise teacher once advised me to read or listen to something in my target language for five minutes a day in addition to my formal studies. For me, this was a fun challenge which helped me to expand my skills. Reading a fashion magazine in French or or listening to a short video in Russian (first with subtitles then without) helped me to gain exposure to those languages as they were really used by native speakers. Those five mintues a day helped me immeasurably with my formal studies because they kept me active and engaged. Also, the topics were always interesting. I chose anything from hobbies to travel to cuisine to current events. Using materials from real life gave me a sense of real progress. If you try this method, I am sure you will make progress too!
