'Daylight Saving Time' in the UK!

Liz English

Next weekend, on Sunday 26th October, we will say goodbye to 'British Summer Time' and hello to 'Greenwich Mean Time' when the clocks go back by 1 hour!

This is our version of the 'Daylight Saving Time' that happens in many countries in the northern hemisphere.

On a practical level, it means that the schedule times of tutors in the UK, including myself, will shift by 1 hour.

What do you think about the idea of changing the clocks twice a year? Would it confuse you? Even though we're used to it in the UK, it always takes a bit of time to adjust to it.

Personally, I don't enjoy the clocks going back in the autumn, it really signals the start of winter for me, and the dark afternoons can be difficult. It's also really annoying having to change the clocks. The digital ones update themselves, but I can never remember how to change the one on the oven! Thankfully it doesn't involve getting up a ladder like the man in the photo...

If you're interested in reading more about this, why not take a look at this BBC article:

If you'd like to chat about this, or literally ANY other topic in a casual conversation with a British person, why not pop by for my new 'Casual Chat in English' lesson.
(If you would like a longer chat than this, as well as many of my other popular lessons are now also available as a 50 minute option).
