ESL Lesson: Discovering Sydney!

Hi everyone! Here is lesson plan on Sydney. Happy New Year!
  • Level: Beginner to Low-Intermediate (A2/B1)
  • Time: 45-60 minutes
  • Topic: Sydney Landmarks & Culture
  • Objective: Students will learn and use vocabulary related to famous Sydney places, describe simple sights, and practice basic travel/ordering English. 
 

 
1. Warm-up (5-10 mins): "What's This?"
  • Activity: Show pictures of famous Sydney landmarks (Sydney Harbour Bridge, Opera House, Bondi).
  • Teacher: "What are these? Where are they?" (Elicit answers, introduce the word "landmark" if appropriate). 
 
2. Vocabulary Building (10-15 mins): Sydney Words
  • Activity: Introduce key vocabulary using flashcards or images.
  • Words: Harbour Bridge, ferry, beach, rugby, flat white coffee, Circular Quay.
  • Practice: Have students repeat words and match words to pictures. 
 
3. Main Activity (15-20 mins): "Visit Sydney!" Role-Play
  • Scenario: Students role-play common situations: going to Bondi by ferry, asking for directions, or visiting a landmark.
  • Materials: Simple dialogue prompts (e.g., "Can I have one ticket to Bondi, please? How much is it?"), 
4. Listening/Speaking Practice (10 mins): "My NYC Dream"
  • Activity: Students discuss in pairs/small groups: "What place in Sydney do you want to visit? Why?" or "What do you want to see/eat/do in Sydney?".
  • Teacher: Circulate, help with vocabulary (e.g., exciting, tall, busy, delicious). 
 
5. Wrap-up (5 mins): Quick Review
  • Activity: Ask a few students to share one thing they learned or one place they want to visit in Sydney.
  • Teacher: "Great job today! We learned about Sydney. What's your favorite thing?".
