English Idioms Challenge - Week 5

Miss Ren.

Hey all! This is the fifth week of my English learning challenge: to try & use this idiom in your next lesson, study session, or in a natural conversation!

If you're looking for more idioms, please check out my other tutor columns!

Since we've all been discussing, or hearing about, the Olympics, here are some fun idioms to use when chatting!

(the) peanut gallery

meaning: a group of people who often criticize or offer advice on something, especially something they are not pros at

usage: when you're pointing out mistakes an Olympian is making while sporting

image: Do you know the comic Peanuts? Maybe you'll remember Snoopy, instead! One running joke in Peanuts is that Charlie Brown cannot kick the American football, instead getting pranked and usually falling. The other characters often stand around and comment about what he should have done instead.

Examples:
  • We were watching the Olympics and acting like we in the peanut gallery knew better than a professional!
  • Hey, peanut gallery! Can you quit criticizing us so loudly? Do you want to try?
  • I feel like everyone in the peanut gallery thinks we're doing terribly.

P.S. If you want to pratice any of the idioms bolded in this column, feel free to schedule a lesson with me!
