Do you have questions? Tutors are here to help!

今週のテーマ: 講師に遠慮せず聞いていい質問とは

We can sometimes feel shy when working with a tutor.  However, our tutors are here to help!  They love answering questions.

Here are some ways to ask common questions in a way which is both polite and easily understood:

I'm sorry.  I didn't understand. Could you repeat that please?
  • If your tutor is speaking and you miss a word or phrase, you should not feel shy about asking him/her to repeat it.  Your tutor should be happy to repeat as he or she knows you are in the process of learning.
I'm sorry.  I didn't get that. Could you slow down?
  • If you are working with a native speaker, you may not always understand his/her natural speech (BUT you are here to learn!).  Your tutor will be happy to slow down if you ask. He/she knows you may not understand 100% of the natural speech of a native speaker.

I didn't understand.  What was the meaning of that word?
  • Inevitably, there may be some words in a lesson which you do not know (and which are not part of a vocabulary list).  If you hear or see a word you don't know, your tutor should be glad to explain its meaning.

I've heard the word pronounced another way.  Can you explain the differences in pronunciation?
  • There may be regional differences in the language you are studying. For example, British and American pronunciation differ.  If you have heard a word pronounced in more than one way, it is fine to ask your tutor to clarify.  (For example, the tutor may say "In my region, we pronounce it this way.  In country X, it is pronounced the way you heard.  Both are correct."
We have now reviewed some of the most common questions.  Tutors are happy to address these questions and many more.  Remember, they love answering questions!

If you are interested in studying with a friendly, helpful, tutor who is not afraid of questions, why not try a class with me?
