「エモい」って、どんな意味？

さいきん、「エモい」ということばをよくききます。
Recently, you often hear the word “emoi” in Japan.

SNSやともだちとのかいわで、よくつかわれています。
It is often used on social media and in conversations with friends.

たとえば、こんなふうにいいます。
For example, people say it like this.

「このしゃしん、エモい！」
“This photo is so emoi!”

「このうた、エモいね。」
“This song feels so emoi.”

「きょうのゆうやけ、すごくエモい。」
“Today’s sunset is really emoi.”

では、「エモい」はどんないみでしょうか。
So, what does “emoi” mean?

このことばは、えいごの emotional からきたといわれています。
This word is said to come from the English word emotional.

でも、にほんごではすこしいみがひろいです。
But in Japanese, the meaning is a little broader.

たとえば、
For example,

こんなきもちをかんじたときにつかいます。
It is used when you feel these kinds of emotions.

ゆうやけをみたとき、
When you see a sunset,

むかしよくきいたおんがくをきいたとき、
when you listen to music you often heard long ago,

こどものころのしゃしんをみたとき、
or when you look at childhood photos,

なんともいえないきもちになることがあります。
sometimes you feel something hard to explain.

そんなとき、にほんじんは「エモい」ということがあります。
At times like that, Japanese people may say “emoi.”

「エモい」は、ただ「なつかしい」だけではありません。
“Emoi” does not only mean “nostalgic.”

いまがたいせつだとかんじるときにもつかいます。
It can also be used when you feel the present moment is precious.

だから、とてもべんりなことばです。
That is why it is a very useful word.
