Have you ever felt that a goal (like learning a language) seemed too challenging? When you think about your current level of achievement and your desired level of achievement it might seem impossible to bridge the gap. Here's a secret: Try smaller (but attainable) goals...then add five minutes a day!
If you plan to learn Russian, don't start with War and Peace. If you plan to learn English, don't start with the Wall Street Journal. Start with something geared towards your level (like stories or podcasts for learners). Do a little every day and, most of all, have fun. You'll find that before you know it your vocabulary has grown and you are closer to reading (or listening to) "authentic" material made for native speakers.
After you have begun to work with smaller (but attainable) goals, add a little more. Why not spend five additional minutes a day working with your target language? Why not listen to a song or watch part of a movie? (Subtitles are OK here!) The goal is to gain exposure in an enjoyable way. You will find that those extra minutes add up.
Still feeling overwhelmed? Try smaller attainable goals and add an extra five minutes a day. You'll find you are making progress and, before you know it, you'll be closer to your overall goal. Have confidence in yourself. You can do it!
