Pumpkin Pie — My Favorite Dessert

今週のテーマ: お気に入りのデザートや料理について教えてください

I asked myself, “What’s my favorite dessert?” After about 10 seconds of thinking, the answer was crystal clear: Pumpkin Pie.

Its texture is soft and smooth, a little bit like pudding but firmer. Its crust is a little flaky and slightly crunchy. It’s not too sweet, and people often eat it warm. Along with its smooth and mild texture, it’s the ingredients that make the dessert so pleasing to the palate — cinnamon, pumpkin, cloves, and ginger, among others. These are some of my favorite ingredients for sweet foods in general. Moreover, most of these ingredients are also found in chai (cinnamon, cloves, and ginger), which is one of my favorite drinks.

As far as I can remember, I’ve always eaten this dessert made by my mother, so I decided to call her so she could tell me a bit more about it.

She shared some magazine cuttings she obtained a long time ago when we used to live in Canada. She told me that pumpkin pie is a Fall (Autumn) dessert because Fall is the season when pumpkins are typically harvested. Even the colors of the dessert are a little like those of Fall!

Note that although the recipe she shared with me says “canned pumpkin,” my mom makes the dessert with real boiled and mashed pumpkin.

I can picture myself eating pumpkin pie on a cool but sunny day of Fall with a cup of tea after lunch. A soul-warming experience.
