Using public transit in Vancouver, Canada

Ivan K

Are you interested in coming to Vancouver, BC, Canada? If you end up coming here, you may need to use public transit to get around. The most important parts of the Vancouver public transit system to understand are the SkyTrain and buses.

The SkyTrain is like a metro or subway system, but most of it is above ground, hence the name. Both the SkyTrain and the buses use the same payment system; they can be paid for using a special card called the Compass Card, which can be purchased at SkyTrain stations and in many stores, and requires an online account. But for most visitors, it will probably be easier to just use a credit card. When entering a SkyTrain station, you can tap a credit card or a phone with Google Pay, Apple Pay, or Samsung pay and when exiting the station, you will need to tap the same card or phone to complete the transaction. When taking a bus, however, you only need to tap your card or phone once on your way in, and you don't need to tap it when you leave.

It costs around $3.15 to $4.45 to take the SkyTrain, depending on how far you go, and buses always cost $3.15.

An important etiquette fact to keep in mind is that you should wait for people to leave or disembark the train or bus before boarding.

Let me know if you have any questions about taking public transit in Canada.
