My Absolute Favorite Dish: The King of Nigerian Celebrations.

Weekly Topic: Tell us about your favorite dessert or dish

Ms. Victory

Hello everyone!

Today, I want to step away from grammar and pronunciation rules to share something very close to my heart and my stomach! One of the best ways to learn a new language is to learn about the culture behind it, and in my culture, food is everything.

If someone asked me to choose just one dish that represents the warmth, energy, and flavor of my home, it would easily be Jollof Rice.

Have you ever heard of it? In West Africa, Jollof Rice is the absolute king of any party, wedding, or family gathering. If there is no Jollof Rice at an event, the party hasn't officially started yet!

What makes it so special? ??

It is a vibrant, reddish-orange rice dish cooked in a rich, savory tomato and red bell pepper paste. It is seasoned with aromatic spices like curry powder, thyme, and bay leaves. The secret to the best Jollof Rice is cooking it slowly so the rice absorbs all the rich, smoky flavors from the sauce.

We usually serve it hot alongside perfectly fried, sweet ripe plantains (which we call dodo) and delicious grilled chicken or beef. The contrast between the savory, slightly spicy rice and the sweet plantains is pure heaven!
