Small Steps, Big Joy: Setting Tiny Goals for June

Kay M

Hello, dear students!

Can you believe June is almost here? The year is almost half over, but don’t worry—this isn’t a reminder about “New Year’s resolutions you forgot.” Instead, I want to talk about something much kinder: setting small, achievable goals for the month ahead.

In June, the days get longer, the air gets warmer, and our energy often feels lighter. It’s the perfect time to stop trying to change everything at once and start focusing on tiny, happy actions.

Here are three small goals you could try this June:

1. The “5-Minute Rule” Goal
Choose one small thing you’ve been avoiding (organizing your desk, reviewing one grammar point, or listening to one short podcast in English). Promise yourself you’ll do it for just 5 minutes. That’s it. Often, starting is the hardest part. After 5 minutes, you can stop—or keep going if you feel inspired.

2. The “One New Phrase a Day” Goal
Instead of trying to memorize 50 new words this month, aim for just one useful phrase per day. Write it on a sticky note. Say it out loud three times while brushing your teeth. By June 30th, you’ll have 30 real, usable phrases—far more powerful than a long list you’ll forget.

3. The “Celebrate Small Wins” Goal
This is my favorite. Every time you finish a small goal (even a 5-minute study session!), give yourself credit. Put a star on your calendar. Text a friend. Tell me in our next lesson! Don’t wait until you’re “fluent” to feel proud. Be proud of showing up.

Why June is special for small goals
June feels like a bridge between spring’s fresh start and summer’s freedom. It’s not too late to begin something new, but it’s also relaxed enough that you don’t need pressure. Think of June as your practice month—a time to experiment with being consistent in small, enjoyable ways.

Your turn!
I’d love to help you choose your small goal for June. In our next lesson, let’s spend 3 minutes answering these questions:

What’s one tiny thing you’d like to do in June?

How will you celebrate when you do it?

Let’s make June the month of small steps, gentle progress, and many little celebrations.

See you in class!
