What to Do After a Bad Test Result (Hint: It’s Not Time to Give Up!)

今週のテーマ: テストで失敗した後にするべきこと

Lisa D.

We’ve all been there. You open your test results—whether it’s a formal proficiency exam like TOEIC or IELTS, or a personal milestone check—and the score isn't what you hoped for. It’s completely normal to feel a sting of disappointment.

But here is the truth: A test score is just a snapshot of a single day, not a reflection of your potential.

If a recent result has you feeling stuck, let’s talk about a gentle, high-impact strategy to turn that disappointment into momentum.

1. The Initial Review (Look, Don't Panic)

Before you hide the test paper in a drawer, take a brief look at where things went off track. Was it a specific section like listening speed, or did vocabulary choices trip you up? Identifying the roadblocks right away gives you clarity, taking the mystery (and some of the negative emotion) out of the score.

2. Take a "Reset" Break

Once you know where the gaps are, step away. Close the book, go for a walk, or spend 24 hours doing something completely unrelated to English. Trying to force-study while you are still feeling frustrated rarely works. Give your mind a chance to reset so you can return with fresh energy.

3. Restart and Refocus

When you come back, don’t try to fix everything at once. Pick just one or two specific areas you noticed during your initial review and focus your attention there. Sustainable, steady progress is how real confidence is built.

Let’s Tackle It Together

My lessons are always a safe, zero-pressure space. Mistakes aren't failures here—they are simply the roadmap showing us exactly what to practice next!

If you have a recent test result and want to look it over together, you are always welcome to bring it to your next session. We can break down the tricky parts, celebrate what you did get right, and build a relaxed, customized plan to help you conquer the next one.

You’ve got this, and I'm always in your corner!
