『梅雨』ってどんなもの？　What is the rainy season in Japan like?

Right now, Japan is in the rainy season, which is called tsuyu (梅雨) in Japanese.

Tsuyu is the time of year, usually from the end of May until around July, when Japan has many rainy and cloudy days.

Does your country have a rainy season like tsuyu?

When Japanese people think of the rainy season, many of us think of things like humid weather, hydrangeas, and teru teru bōzu.

So, what does humid mean?

It means that the air has a lot of moisture, so it feels damp and sticky.

For example, we say:

"The room feels humid on rainy days."
"It's hot and humid today."

Personally, I don't like the rainy season very much, so during this time I often say,
"It's so hot and humid again today. I don't like it!" (laugh)

Next, hydrangeas are flowers that bloom during Japan's rainy season.

When it rains and the hydrangeas are covered with raindrops, they look especially beautiful!

Finally, what is a teru teru bōzu?

A teru teru bōzu is a small handmade doll that people make while wishing, "I hope it will be sunny tomorrow."

The word teru means "to shine" or "to be sunny," and bōzu originally means "a little boy" (or "a shaved-headed boy"). So, a teru teru bōzu is like a little boy who brings sunny weather.

In Japan, children often make teru teru bōzu before school sports days, picnics, or other outdoor events, hoping for good weather.

Although the rainy season can make us feel a little gloomy because of all the rain, it also brings many beautiful sights.

日本は今、「梅雨」です。これは「つゆ」と読みます。
「梅雨」は5月の終わりごろから、7月ごろまで雨やくもりの日が多くなる時期のことです。
みなさんの国には「梅雨（つゆ）」がありますか。

日本人の「梅雨」のイメージの中には、
「じめじめしている」「紫陽花（あじさい）」「てるてる坊主」などがあります。

では、「じめじめしている」とはなんでしょう。
これは「湿度（しつど）が高い」という意味です。

例えば、
「雨の日は部屋がじめじめしています。」
「今日は暑くてじめじめしています。」
のように使います。

私は梅雨の時期があまり好きではないので、
この時期はよく「今日もじめじめしていて、やだね〜」と言っています（笑）

「紫陽花（あじさい）」は日本の梅雨の時期によく咲（さ）く花です。

雨が多く降（ふ）って、紫陽花（あじさい）がぬれると、とってもきれいです！

さいごに、「てるてる坊主（ぼうず）」はなんでしょう。
「てるてる坊主（ぼうず）」は「明日、晴（は）れますように」と願（ねが）って作る人形（にんぎょう）のことです。

「てる」は「照る」→「晴（は）れる」、「坊主（ぼうず）」は「男の子」の意味なので、
「てるてる坊主」は「晴れを呼ぶ小さな男の子」のような意味です。

日本では、運動会（うんどうかい）や遠足（えんそく）の前に子どもたちがよく作ります。

「梅雨」は、雨がたくさん降るので気分（きぶん）が下がりますが、きれいな景色（けしき）もたくさんあるので、梅雨の時期も日本の文化を楽しんでくださいね！
