I first started volunteering at a children's centre, where I ran drama and theatre workshops, organised recreational activities and mentored young people. Before long, many of the children began coming to me for help with their schoolwork.
As I worked with them, I noticed that English was one of the subjects many found the most difficult. I realised it was an area where I could make a real difference, so I completed a TEFL course to equip myself with the skills to support them more effectively. From there, I began teaching English through both one-to-one and group lessons.
Even after my volunteering officially ended, I continued visiting the centre, especially during exam revision periods. I wanted to help the students feel more prepared and confident. Seeing the children I had worked with perform well in their final examinations was incredibly rewarding. It made me realise that teaching wasn't just something I enjoyed, it was something I wanted to pursue.
Today, I continue to teach because I know that learning English can open doors to new opportunities. Whether a student wants to improve their confidence, prepare for school or simply enjoy learning, I hope to create a supportive environment where they feel encouraged to grow.
Looking back, I'm grateful that a simple volunteer opportunity led me to discover a passion for teaching. It reminds me that sometimes the most meaningful journeys begin when we least expect them.
