If someone asks me, “What was your favorite subject when you were a student?”, my answer is always the same: dressmaking.

I loved every step of the process—creating a design, making a pattern, sewing a sample, and finally sewing the finished piece. There were many steps before a garment was complete, but I enjoyed every one of them.

What I loved most was seeing an idea in my mind slowly become something real. I could imagine a piece of clothing, and then create it with my own hands. That feeling was exciting, and I often lost track of time while working.

I think people naturally enjoy creating things. It doesn't have to be clothes. It can be cooking, painting, woodworking, writing, or anything else. There is something special about making something with your own hands and seeing it finished.

Even now, I still love making things. I don't sew as often as I did when I was a student, but I still create things whenever I have time. I don't do it to make money—it's simply something I enjoy.

When we work, we often have to think about efficiency or profit. But hobbies are different. They remind us of the simple joy of creating something because we want to, not because we have to.

These days, I create Japanese learning materials for my students. In a way, it feels similar to making clothes. I think carefully about what will be easy to understand and enjoyable to use, and then I turn those ideas into something real.

The subject I loved as a student has stayed with me in a different form. I may not be making clothes every day anymore, but I still find happiness in creating something new.

What was your favorite subject when you were a student?

「学生時代に一番好きだった勉強は何ですか？」と聞かれたら、私は迷わず洋裁と答えます。

布を選び、デザインを考え、型紙を起こし、仮縫いをして、本縫いをする。ひとつの作品が完成するまでにはたくさんの工程がありますが、そのすべてが大好きでした。

特に好きだったのは、頭の中にあるイメージが少しずつ形になっていく瞬間です。「こんな服があったらいいな」と思ったものが、自分の手で本当に完成していく。その過程はとてもわくわくして、時間を忘れるほど夢中になっていました。

私は、人は何かを作り上げることに大きな喜びを感じる生き物なのではないかと思っています。それは洋服だけではありません。料理でも、絵でも、工作でも、文章でも、完成したときの達成感や、「できた！」という喜びは特別なものです。

実は今でも、何かを作ることが大好きです。昔のように毎日ミシンに向かうことはありませんが、時間があるときには趣味として作品を作ることがあります。

仕事になると、「効率」や「利益」を考える場面も増えます。でも、趣味として作る時間は少し違います。誰かに評価されるためでもなく、お金のためでもなく、「作ることそのものが楽しい」という気持ちを思い出させてくれます。

最近は日本語教師として教材を作ることも多いのですが、実はこれも洋裁と少し似ています。生徒さんに「分かりやすいかな」「楽しく学べるかな」と考えながら、一つひとつ形にしていく時間は、学生時代に洋服を作っていた頃と同じような楽しさがあります。

学生時代に夢中になった「ものづくり」は、形を変えながら、今でも私の生活の中で続いています。皆さんは、学生時代に好きだった勉強は何ですか？
