[LOL] The REAL Reason My Chinese Skyrocketed... Happened During THIS Moment!? [Part 11]

Megu3

Hello everyone! I'm Meg, living in Taiwan.

As promised last time, today I want to talk about "my method for learning Chinese"!

...or so I'd like to say.

The truth is, when it comes to special study techniques... I didn't really have any (haha)!!!

I can almost hear you all going "Whaaaat?!" right now (haha), but honestly, I didn't really do much traditional studying at the desk...

However, there was ONE thing that was hands-down the most effective method for me.

And that was... "getting a local (Taiwanese) boyfriend"!! ✨

Have you all heard people say that "having a local partner is the fastest way to improve your language skills"?

...Well, they are 100% RIGHT!!! (haha)

While casual daily banter certainly plays a part, in my case, I suddenly desperately needed high-level Chinese skills during one "pivotal moment."

Can you guess when that was...?

The answer is... "When getting into an ARGUMENT"!!!! ?? (haha)

When arguing with your partner, have you ever felt frustrated because you thought, "Ugh, I want to say this back so badly, but I don't know the Chinese words for it!" and ended up giving up in tears? (haha)

I was SO ridiculously frustrated by that... I swore to myself: "NEXT TIME, I AM DEFINITELY FIGHTING BACK!!!" (haha)

From that point on, I searched up every possible conversation pattern and angry expression (haha)—asking myself, "How do I say this in a situation like this?" and "How can I accurately express my feelings?"—and memorized them for dear life!

...Yep. That is officially the moment my Chinese rapidly improved (haha).

I can already hear you guys yelling, "That is NOT helpful study advice at all!" www

(Don't worry, of course I give my actual students very proper and serious learning tips in real lessons! haha)

In the next column, I'll share more stories from my grad school journey, so stay tuned~!

☕️ A Little Note from Meg "Learning a language through arguments makes TOO much sense (haha)!" "Words really stick in your memory when feelings are attached!" I'd love to read your thoughts in the comments!
