How Learning Languages Helps Me Stay Creative

Katrina Santos

Hi everyone, I’m Katrina!

This week’s topic is “A hobby that helps me stay creative.”

For me, one hobby that keeps my mind creative is learning languages.

What I enjoy most is discovering that the same idea can be expressed in completely different ways depending on the language. Sometimes a word has no perfect translation. Sometimes a joke works in one language but sounds completely different in another. These little differences make language learning interesting for me.

Being a language learner also reminds me that knowing vocabulary and actually using it in conversation are two very different things.

Sometimes you know exactly what you want to say, but the words just don’t come out quickly enough. I know that feeling too!

One simple method I like is:

Answer → Reason → One more detail

For example:

I like winter.

↓ Add a reason

I like winter because I like cold weather.

↓ Add one more detail

I like winter because I like cold weather, and I enjoy seeing the Christmas lights around the city.

You don’t always need difficult vocabulary or perfect grammar to have a good conversation. Sometimes, adding just one more sentence is enough to make your English sound more natural and keep the conversation going.

That is also one of the things I find creative about learning languages: finding new ways to express your own thoughts with the words you already know.

And little by little, those short answers become real conversations. ??
