Why Does Spoken French Sound So Fast?

Sabine Lea

Have you ever studied French for months — or even years — and then felt completely lost when listening to native French speakers?

You know the vocabulary.
You know the grammar.
But suddenly, real French sounds much faster and very different from the French you learned in textbooks.

This is completely normal.

One of the main difficulties in French is that written French and spoken French do not always sound the same.

Native speakers connect words, reduce certain sounds and use a natural rhythm that learners are not always taught from the beginning.

For example:

Vous avez → words naturally connect through liaison.

Je ne sais pas → “j’sais pas”
In everyday conversation, some sounds or words can disappear.

Il y a → “y a”
Real spoken French is often shorter than textbook French.

This is why pronunciation is not only about having a good accent.

Phonetics also helps you understand native speakers.

I am Sabine Lea, a native and certified French teacher with more than 20 years of teaching experience and over 5,500 hours of online lessons.

I am also the author of published books on French phonetics and pronunciation.

Phonetics is an important part of my teaching because it helps students not only improve their pronunciation, but also understand why real spoken French can sound so different from written French.

In my lessons, I help students understand how French is really spoken and become progressively more confident and independent.

Depending on your needs, we can work on:

• conversation and fluency
• pronunciation and phonetics
• listening comprehension
• grammar and vocabulary
• writing and spelling
• Business French
• DELF, DALF, TCF and TEF preparation

Lessons are personalized from A1 to C2.

When necessary, I can also explain French in English or Spanish.

If understanding real spoken French is one of your difficulties, we can work on it together step by step.

À bientôt!
