What my students taught me this summer: Silence is worse than a broken sentence

Weekly Topic: Something I learned during the summer

Fex

If this summer taught me anything about learning a language, it’s watching the silent battle so many students fight in class.

Over the past few months, the biggest roadblock I kept noticing wasn’t tricky grammar or a lack of vocabulary. It was fear.

So many people would freeze up, second-guess every syllable in their head, and choose silence just to avoid making a mistake. It’s completely understandable—nobody likes feeling awkward or saying the wrong thing. But staying quiet to protect your pride is a trap. It just keeps you stuck in the exact same spot.

Here’s the reality: making mistakes isn’t failure. It’s literally the diagnostic test of learning.

You can’t improve a sentence that stays locked in your head. When you actually speak—even if it’s messy, broken, or hesitant—you bring the real problem out into the open. That’s where the growth happens. You finally see what’s working, what feels unnatural, and where the gaps are.

The trick is, you shouldn't have to navigate those blind spots alone.

Trying to critique your own speaking is tough. You need a mentor who creates a safe space—someone who doesn't cut you off mid-thought with a red pen, but who genuinely listens, guides you through the rough patches, and gives you clear, encouraging feedback so you leave every conversation a little stronger than the last.

Don't let the fear of a bad sentence steal your voice. Say the messy version first. The polish comes later.

I’d love to hear your thoughts: What’s the one fear that makes you hesitate the most when you try to speak English?

(And if you're looking for a mentor to help you get past the fear, practice speaking out loud, and give you honest, gentle feedback, feel free to book a trial chat. Let's make some mistakes together!)
