If this summer taught me anything about learning a language, it’s watching the silent battle so many students fight in class.
Over the past few months, the biggest roadblock I kept noticing wasn’t tricky grammar or a lack of vocabulary. It was fear.
So many people would freeze up, second-guess every syllable in their head, and choose silence just to avoid making a mistake. It’s completely understandable—nobody likes feeling awkward or saying the wrong thing. But staying quiet to protect your pride is a trap. It just keeps you stuck in the exact same spot.
Here’s the reality: making mistakes isn’t failure. It’s literally the diagnostic test of learning.
You can’t improve a sentence that stays locked in your head. When you actually speak—even if it’s messy, broken, or hesitant—you bring the real problem out into the open. That’s where the growth happens. You finally see what’s working, what feels unnatural, and where the gaps are.
The trick is, you shouldn't have to navigate those blind spots alone.
Trying to critique your own speaking is tough. You need a mentor who creates a safe space—someone who doesn't cut you off mid-thought with a red pen, but who genuinely listens, guides you through the rough patches, and gives you clear, encouraging feedback so you leave every conversation a little stronger than the last.
