A Fall Visit to Maine

Ann K

As the seasons change, I often think of visiting the neighboring state of Maine.  At this time of year, the leaves begin to change a bit earlier than in the Boston area.  People travel many miles to see the foliage (colorful leaves) in New England and, especially, in the northern states of Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont.  When I drive north to Maine,  I always take particular pleasure in the brillaint red, orange, and yellow hues which decorate every tree and show New England at its finest.

In fall, Mainers (and New Englanders in general) visit farms to go apple picking.  Afterwards, they bake delicious traditional pies best enjoyed on cooler fall evenings.  Festivals like York Harvest Fest draw visitors who enjoy everything from seasonal cuisine to hay rides (in horse-drawn carts).  I enjoy visiting York in every season, but my favorite time is when the leaves change.

The fun in Maine doesn't stop with outdoor activities.  One of my favorite indoor activities is a visit to the Ogunquit Playhouse.  Although this venue is known for summer productions, it is very pleasant to visit in September and October.  After a world-class performance, visitors can discover the famous seaside town of Ogunquit.  Here, they can enjoy seafood and seasonal treats like pumpkin pie as well as breathtaking views of the Atlantic.  Whenever I visit, I walk along the cliffs of Marginal Way and gaze out at the sea and up at the stars.

For all of these reasons (and many more), I would love to visit Maine this fall.  If you are interested in learning about the uniquely beautiful fall season in Maine (and in my region of New England), why not try the lesson below on New England Fall Traditions?
