まねきねこで まなぶ にほんご Learning Japanese with the Maneki-neko

Sasya

At Sumiyoshi Taisha, I found a big signboard with a cat on it. The white cat is raising its paw. It is a "maneki-neko" (beckoning cat). "Ageteimasu" (is raising) is used to describe the current state of something.

"Maneki-neko" is "maneku" + "neko." "Maneku" means to wave your hand and say "come here." Here, "maneku" changes to "maneki." The same change happens in "nomu" + "mono" = "nomimono" (drink), and "taberu" + "mono" = "tabemono" (food).

The signboard has large kanji written on it. "Shobai hanjo" (business prosperity) means "I hope my shop does well." "Kanai anzen" (family safety) means "I hope my family stays healthy." Both are wishes that you can express with the "~masu yo ni" pattern (I hope that...). Example: "Kazoku ga genki ni narimasu yo ni." (I hope my family stays healthy.)

It is said that the cat's paws have meanings. One explanation is that the "migite" (right hand) brings money and work, and the "hidarite" (left hand) brings people and good connections. Let's learn "migite" and "hidarite" together.

Look closely at the cat on the signboard. Its body is white, and its clothes are blue and black. The bag is brown, and its eyes are yellow. Use these color words and try saying, "Shiroi neko ga aoi kimono o kite imasu" (A white cat is wearing blue clothes).

Do you have a lucky charm in your country? Please tell me in Japanese!
