Description

Target Audience:
High school and university students, particularly those working on research projects or assignments requiring critical analysis of scholarly sources. Suitable for beginners to intermediate students looking to enhance their research skills and critical reading strategies.

Lesson Overview:
This two-part course equips students with essential research and reading techniques to help them select, analyze, and extract valuable insights from scholarly articles, journals, and reports. Through structured guidance and hands-on practice, students will learn to efficiently navigate secondary sources, streamline the research process, and critically engage with academic material.

Skills and Topics Covered:

  • Identifying relevant and credible scholarly sources
  • Navigating academic databases to find journal articles and reports
  • Breaking down dense, complex texts into manageable parts
  • Extracting key ideas, arguments, and supporting details
  • Techniques for efficient reading and note-taking to capture essential information
  • Strategies for quickly assessing the crux of articles and critical essays

Methodology and Teaching Style:
This course is designed to be interactive and practical, combining direct instruction with guided practice. I use real-life examples to demonstrate techniques and then work closely with students on applying these strategies to materials relevant to their own interests. Lessons are organized to first build foundational skills in source selection and breakdown, followed by hands-on practice in analyzing and interpreting scholarly texts.

Lesson Structure:

Lesson 1: Finding and Selecting the Right Sources & Breaking Down Complex Texts

  • Objective: Teach students how to identify appropriate sources for their research and how to deconstruct complex academic articles.
  • Content Covered:
    • Guidance on navigating academic databases and search engines (e.g., Google Scholar, JSTOR).
    • Tips on selecting relevant articles and assessing credibility.
    • Step-by-step demonstration on how to break down a lengthy or dense article into its essential components (abstract, introduction, main arguments, and conclusion).
    • Techniques for quickly capturing key insights and supporting points.
  • Practice Activity: Using an example article, we’ll work together to identify its main points and supporting arguments, and I’ll show students how to take concise notes that capture essential information.

Lesson 2: Analyzing and Synthesizing Scholarly Texts

  • Objective: Provide hands-on practice in reading, analyzing, and synthesizing information from scholarly sources.
  • Content Covered:
    • Techniques for reading dense material more quickly and retaining key points.
    • Analyzing arguments, spotting biases, and understanding the context of academic discussions.
    • Strategies for note-taking, annotation, and synthesis to create a cohesive summary.
  • Practice Activity: The student will bring an article or academic paper of their choice (or we can select one together). We’ll work through it step-by-step, discussing the main arguments, identifying critical information, and using strategies to pull together a summary or analysis efficiently.
