Preparation: essay requirements, conventions and checking your background knowledge.
Description
Good essay writing is largely the result of good preparation. This class will introduce students' to the essay writing process and it is suitable for anybody who needs to communicate using written English to a relatively advanced standard.
Although the lesson is largely focused on essay writing for academic purposes it is also relevent to anybody wanting to improve their report, technical or formal English writing skills.
This introductory class is enjoyable and interactive with discussion and exercises to test and reinforce your knowledge and understanding. By the end of the class students will have a thorough understanding of:
- what an undergraduate/postgraduate level essay is and why we are required to write them.
- How to prepare for an essay.
- Analysing and understanding the question.
- Getting started: writing good essays - academic conventions, appropriate language, answering the question.
- Essay/dissertation structure.Drafting and redrafting.
- Editing and proofreading.
