identifying noun suffixes and different syllable stress patterns they cause
Description
Present (Syllable):
First, I elicit the notion of what a syllable is from the learner to gauge their knowledge and build on it. We discuss what makes a syllable in English, as this is different in differnt languages.
Practice (Ponunciation):
Next, we identify how to detect a syllable. I introduce multiple syllable words and the learner counts the syllables with me.
We look at some noun suffixes and build longer words by adding the correct suffix. As we do this, the learner listens to confirm their previous work. The learner listens again to shadow the audio slowly and intentionally to master the individual sounds and stressed syllable of each word.
Produce (speaking):
Now, I introduce a reading piece with follow up prompting questions to guide the learner to use new words and focus on the correct pronunciation and syllable stress. By this stage, we will have also corrected personal learner pronunciation mistakes and simplified their pronunciation challenges for this topic.
Follow up (Self study):
To practice this outside of class, I give the learner more self study exercises to keep practicing this lesson and correct their own mistakes in the real world and until next lesson, where we talk about intonation.
