Title: The world of pets and their importance to human beings with emphasis on Dogs.

Focus: English Lesson on Let's talk about pets!  – May 2022 Campaign

Objective: To discuss the world of pets and their importance to human beings with emphasis on Dogs

Date: 16th April, 2022.   Class Level: Intermediary & Adults

 

Business / Materials

1. PPT of lesson

2. Pictures of some Plants & Animals

3. Pictures of ed animals for classification

4. A quote “Nature is beautiful.”

Lesson Objectives

1. Students will be able to identify & classify animals in a picture into domestic & non-domestic animals.

2. Students will be able to understand the term “pets” and name common pets.

3. Students will be able to understand the importance of pets to human beings.

4. Students will learn about types, uses & importance of dogs and how to handle them.

 

Warm-up

1. The Teacher draws the attention of students to the Quote “Nature is beautiful” & guides them to understand nature and its components –Plants, Animals, Human Beings, Landforms & the Environment.

2. The Teacher make clear sounds of a cat and a dog and guides students to identify the animals that make those particular noises.

3. Inform the students that today’s lesson is about pets with emphasis on dogs.

 

Instruct & Model

1. The Teacher guides the students to identify some ed animals in a picture & classify them into domestic and on-domestic animals.

 2. The Teacher provides instruction on the meaning of pets and their importance to human beings.

3. Discuss with students why dogs are referred to as “Man’s best friend.”

4. The Teacher discusses with students the main types of dogs and correct pronunciation names e.g. Bulldog.

5. Discuss with students the main reasons why people keep dogs as pets e.g. as companions, to keep security, to help in hunting & as a source of food.

6. The Teacher uses WH-Questions to discuss the main things to be done to keep dogs happy & healthy  e.g. provision of nutritious food, regular bath, regular vetinary services, gooming & walking the dog.

 

Guided Practice

1. Guide the students to explain the term “Pets.”

2. Let students list 4 examples of Pets.

3. Let students give 3 reasons why people keep pets.

 

Independent Practice

Let students attempt the following True/False questions

1) True/False. Beagle is a type of dog.

2) True/False. In North America dogs are usually regarded as part of the family.

3) True/False. Dogs can be given training to do many things.

4) True/False. A baby dog is called a Puppy.

 

Assessment

Students are to attempt the following questions:

1) Construct 2 sentences and include in each a benefit of keeping a dog as a pet.

2} Construct 2 sentences and include in each a disadvantage of keeping a dog as a pet.
