English through Literature: Introduction to J.R.R. Tolkien and The Hobbit 1/ English level: beginner, intermediate, or advanced depending on your level
Practice your English by exploring who J.R.R. Tollkien was and talking about The Hobbit (characters and plot). I'll adapt this lesson to your needs.

Are you interested in Tolkien? This is a great way to practice and learn English while you find out who he was and what The Hobbit is about. You don't need to have an advanced English level. This lesson is designed for upper beginners and low intermediate students who want to practice and learn English while exploring Tolkien's work.
- Using a PowerPoint presentation, we will talk about Tolkien's life.
- Using pictures, we will overview the main characters, describe them and guess their role in the story. This is a great opportunity to practice descriptions in English.
- Using images, we will talk about the different settings of the story and what they symbolize: Bilbo's home = safety, the forest = danger.
- We will identify the main events in the story and guess what happens.
- We will read a short fragment of the story and discuss it.
