I live in Nachikatsuura, Wakayama ken and have been using this D.R.T.A. approach for a couple of years with a lot of success. D.R.T.A. stands for `Directed Reading and Thinking Activities`. It encourages students to make predictions about a story. The stories and format I use were written by the American teacher Lindsay Young. I have been in contact with her and she approves the use of her work. It has helped my students with vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation.

Jack started by showing a paragraph in the chat box. We practiced reading it aloud, then after Jack asked some questions about the story, I had to ask some questions too. Making interrogative sentences right away was surprisingly difficult. I've always struggled with interrogative sentences, but I finally found a way to practice them in this lesson.

We used a story to discuss during the lesson. Jack guided me in predicting its genre and gave me a lot of chances to read and ask questions about the story. It’s helpful for students to learn how to ask questions as we are used to answering questions from a teacher. So, I find it beneficial for me to learn and practice my speaking in the lesson. Plus, Jack is really friendly and a guidable teacher. Thank you very much.

氣氛輕鬆內容充實容易溝通

予測しながらストーリーを読むレッスンはとても興味深いです。タイトルから何を想像するか、最初のセグメントを読んでわかることは何か、などの質問に答えながら進んでいきます。先生は穏やかで、話をじっくり聞いてくれるので自分の考えを英語で伝えるいい練習になります。お互いの生活のことなども緊張せずにたくさん話せて楽しかったです。ストーリーの今後の展開が気になります^^
